IPS “Ravizza” is a Vocational School for Tourism, Business, Social Studies, and Hotel Services, with courses in: Travel and Tourism, Business and Economics, Health and Social Care, Culinary Arts, Reception, Restaurant and Bar Tending. The school is based in Novara, a town in the North of Italy, less than 50 km west from Milan. It is located into three separate buildings: the first one in the town centre, the second at the north outskirt of the town and the third in a residential neighborhood midway between the other two.
Novara has got about 105,000 inhabitants. Apparently it is a quiet town, but under the surface there are poverties and social problems that are increasingly involving the young generations of both Italian and foreign origins.
The secondary schools in our town are 16 and Ravizza Institute is the biggest. We have more than one thousand students (60% girls, 40% boys), aged between 14 and 19; more than 10 % of them come from a foreign country (mainly from Eastern Europe and North Africa), and about 8% have special needs. In the first classes we have a meaningful percentage of drop-outs (students who are much older than the average and do not fit in, students that are only waiting for the right age to go to work, students with no motivations and a very low self-esteem). In the final classes students get more focused and gain a much more mature attitude, also thanks to the vocational training experiences they are asked to go through and the several cross-curricular activities the school offers them.
